Alebrije are a type of Mexican folk art, they're intricately detailed and colorful sculptures made from mostly either Oaxacan Opal wood or paper mache! Alebrije originally depicted chimeras or a combination of different animals fused together, however it's not uncommon to see regular animals presented in this style!
 
I've always found axolotl fascinating! Not only are they cute but they can regrow limbs and other body parts, unlike most salamanders they also remain aquatic for their entire lives rather than undergoing metamorphosis and taking to the land.

The Axolotl is endemic to Mexico and can be found in lake Xochimilco!
