The nursery rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle dates back as early as the 16th century,
the earliest version that resembles the rhyme as we know it was printed in 1765!

There are multiple theories about possible symbolism behind the lyrics in this rhyme, one being that it is connected to worship of the Egyptian goddess Hathor who is often depicted as a cow.
A second being that the poem refers to Catherine of Aragon, also known as Catherine la Fidele.
It's widely accepted that the verse was simply intended to be playful nonsense however!
