The word Taiyaki means baked sea bream, sea bream being the fish this snack takes its appearance from!

Taiyaki are made from a pancake or waffle batter and are cooked in special fish shaped moulds that are double sided.

One side of the mould will have a filling added to it on top of the waffle batter, the most common filling is red bean paste! Once the two parts of the waffle are partially cooked the mould is closed and the Taiyaki are then further cooked sealing the two sides of the Taiyaki together!
